The magic of making
So… Last Sunday was the coolest day. It’s rare that things turn out BETTER than expected, and this was one of those rare times. I know that all natural breath sprays haven’t been a “thing” (until now ;)), so I really wanted to create a video to help tell the story of my products. I didn’t have a large budget, had about a week to plan, and had 0 experience putting together a video shoot.
This is where it’s so easy to let self doubt and fear hold you back from achieving what you want.
Instead, I got to witness the absolute magic that is born from people coming together and collaborating.
What follows is my “I never ACTUALLY expected them to say yes…” list:
I reached out to a distant friend who I knew has a production company… never expecting that he would have the time to help me. Chris Boyd with Diego City Media happens to be the most generous person on earth and offered to help me, with a week notice, going ABOVE AND BEYOND my wildest dreams of what this shoot could be. I’m talking bringing an assistant, full lighting, a comprehensive plan and layout of the shoot, and the full range of camera equipment. WHAT!! He had everyone after the shoot gushing about how professional and enjoyable to work with he was.
2. Next on the list was a friend of a friend who I had met one time, Paul Hibberd. With a friendly and accepting spirit, Paul is the kind of person that you can meet once and instantly feel like you are good friends. Somehow this lead to him and his family being okay with my team taking over his gorgeous house for half a day and using it as our shooting venue, complete with their BRAND NEW GOLDEN RETRIEVER PUPPY.
3. Once I knew that a shoot was actually possible, I reached out to 2 brands I’ve been following and have wanted to work with, GoodLaundry and Jiant Kombucha- hoping for the off chance that they would be open to some type of collaboration. I didn’t hear back from Jiant at first, and those thoughts of “there’s no way they’ll want to work with me” set in. You know, the usual totally inaccurate thoughts that don’t serve any real purpose? Yeah, those ones. To the surprise of these thoughts, Jiant replied and were open and excited about collaborating for the video!
Soooo… Let’s talk about GoodLaundry. Lindsey from GoodLaundry was a huge support for this whole production. She showed up with an amazing wardrobe for the girls, steamed + prepared everything, took behind the scene photos, and helped cultivate a really fun energy for the shoot. Not to mention- THOSE GARMENTS. All of the girls were in love, from the colors, to the way they fall on the body and enhance any body shape, to the feel of the fabric and fact that they are sustainable and ethically made. A total dream.
4. I reached out to girls whose energy I love and thought would be a great fit for what I wanted for the video. I assumed some wouldn’t be able to come at the last minute…. but EVERYONE that I contacted showed up for this. I felt so loved and supported and am so thankful to be surrounded by people who want to support up and coming brands. And they KILLED IT, even though being in front of a camera for hours on a scorching hot day is a sweet form of torture.
All in all…. I’m so overwhelmingly thankful for how everything came together. It is a strong reminder to go after what you want and not be afraid to ask for help. It’s beautiful to see people want to help each other and create something meaningful together. Let this be a reminder that if there’s anything you want to do but are afraid to reach out for help, DO IT! You may be surprised by the way people will support you.
P.S. I CAN’T WAIT to release this commercial! Stay tuned….
